Hi, I’m Yuya — a Japanese calligraphy artist with a passion for sharing the spirit and beauty of Japan through handwritten Kanji art.
Between 2017 and 2019, I traveled across 18 countries, writing over 15,000 people’s names in Kanji as a street artist. My journey began on the streets of Sydney, Australia, where I offered personalized calligraphy for passersby. What started as a simple act of cultural expression turned into something much deeper — a form of connection that transcended language.
One of the moments that stays with me: a father in Sydney told me,
“You made his day,” after I gave his son a Kanji name artwork. That simple smile reminded me how meaningful this art could be.
My journey with calligraphy actually began much earlier. As a high school student in Japan, I submitted works to exhibitions and was honored with multiple awards. But it was from 2017 onward that I truly immersed myself in the craft — not just as a skill, but as a daily discipline and a way of life.
Calligraphy became a meditative ritual, helping me reconnect with myself and shape the person I want to become. Every morning, brush in hand, I sit in silence and write. It grounds me. It challenges me. And it transforms me.
Even without speaking fluent English at the time, I found that Kanji could speak for me. People felt something. That’s the magic of calligraphy — it goes beyond words.
One time, I even bumped into a Canadian man in Shibuya who had tattooed a Kanji I had written for him years earlier. That was wild — and unforgettable.
And over the years, calligraphy has brought me far more than artistic satisfaction.
Through this art, I’ve made lifelong friendships, shared moments of real human connection, and encountered people who’ve changed the course of my life — just as I may have touched theirs. It has become a bridge between cultures, hearts, and souls.
Today, I continue to study and refine my art, currently working toward earning my Shihan (calligraphy master) certification in Japan. Each piece I create is an expression of tradition, mindfulness, and your personal story — told through the timeless beauty of Kanji.
